Ruby Bridges was a young black girl who lived in New Orleans,Louisiana in the 1950's. Back then schools and other places were segregated ,which meant that white children and black children were not allowed to go to same school. Many people thought this was wrong to have black and white to be segregated and tried to change the law. In 1954 the Supreme Court of the United States said that schools should be integrated, which mean that white and black children could go to the same schools. It took years for white schools to open there doors to black children but in 1960 Ruby Bridges was chosen to be the first black child to go to a school that used to be a white children only.

Ruby's dad did not want her to go to a white school. He was afraid that people might hurt Ruby or do other bad things to the family . But her mother thought she would get a better education at her new school and it was important to show other black children that they could go to school with white children. To keep Ruby from getting hurt ,she and her mother had to walk to school. A group of special police men called Marshals .The marshals walked with Ruby to school every day and she did not miss a single day of school . Ruby's teacher was named Mrs. Henry. Mrs. Henry was very nice to Ruby and made sure that she got a good education .

The parents of the white children were very angry . They did not want their children to go to school with black children , so they keep there children at home . For months Ruby was the only student in her first grade class . Slowly, the white children began coming to school, and when Ruby was in second grade blacks and whites were in the same class.

In the years that followed, many segregated schools in the United States began to integrated.Ruby Bridges got married and had four children of her own . She often travels around the country making speeches telling people that schools are a place were we have to bring all the races together.
